The 18" chau is an pretty and sensitive gong.  Although its sound is not as deep as the larger gongs, it still has a nice bass and many overtones. It's strong and nuanced enough for meditation; rhythmic music; ornamentation; sound effects; celebrations; ceremonies and visual decoration.  It produces very pleasing dynamics by playing simply and gently.  It is beautiful when played at soft and medium volumes, plus when crescendos (gradually increasing the volume) are played on it, the gong will sing while increasing in intensity and vitality.  Plus, if you want to add a strong percussive feel, play it with two mallets.
