What's a Drum Circle?

© Artdrum

"Rhythm is the soul of life. The whole universe revolves in rhythm. Every thing and every human action revolves in rhythm." ~ Baba Tunji

A drum circle consists of a group of percussion players that typically sit in a circular format.  The circle of players play a rhythmic jam which is done by playing one or more rhythms and variations of those rhythms.

Rhythm, the ultimate universal language, creates a sense of togetherness among the players.  This sense allows the circle to reach high & intimate levels of expression & experience.  Such can bridge any number of cultural or historical gaps and bring people to a truly open & honest form of communication & expression.

In a drum circle, the participants act as both audience and entertainers; sometimes drummers within a circle will even dance.  Interestingly, the success of a drum circle is not dependent on the group’s musical talent or ability, for even beginners & young musicians can create drum circles that are exceptionally fun.  The success is more dependant on the consideration of each player.  If players listen to each other, rather than solely play their instrument, and if players pay attention so not to be too loud, or even too soft, then each person in the circle will better contribute to the jam.  The more each person contributes his or her own rhythmic voice, the more unique & pleasurable the circle will be.
