Premium Cut-round Horse Skins (Rawhide): Great for Doumbeks, Bongos, Batas, Jr Congas, Djembes, Frame Drums, crafts & more
Thin: about .4 to .8 mm thick; Medium: .9 - 1.4 mm; Thick 1.5 - 21.95 mm
Skin Material: Horse rawhide
Description: Each horse skin is pre-cut and ready to be soaked & mounted on a bongo or other drum.
Thickness of Horse Skins:
Thin: .4 to .8 mm (Most horse hides yield more thin skins than medium or thick skins; thin skins are the easiest to obtain)
Medium: .9 - 1.4 mm (Medium horse skins are less common and harder to obtain than thin skins)
Thick: 1.5 to 2 mm (Thick horse skins are rare and the hardest to obtain)
Rule of thumb: The thinner the skin, the brighter the timbre (sound quality) and the more airier sounding
Rule of thumb: The thicker the skin, the warmer the timbre (sound quality) and the more robust sounding
Thin skins are generally recommend for: Doumbeks and darbukas, 6.75" and smaller bongo shells, frame drums, small to medium size djembes; small & large heads for small (Okonkolo) Bata; small head for medium (Itotele) and large (Iya) Batas
Medium skin are generally recommended for: 6.75" bongo shells (if you want a more robust, woodier sound); 7" and larger bongo shells, Jr congas, djembes, large head on for small (Okonkolo) Bata (gives a more robust sound than a thin skin); small & large heads for medium (Itotele) Bata; small & large heads for large (Iya) Bata
Thick Skins are generally recommended for: Congas, Tamboras; large head on large (Iya) Bata
Review: "I had the best experience buying a horse skin for my Matador macho bongo drum back in June [2019]. Superb quality: I sound like a pro with this new skin, loud pops with my slaps!!! Also, I'd like to thank Greg at Artdrum he helped me a lot - very friendly, courteous and he made sure I was a happy customer. Forgot to mention it was only $21, what a deal." ~Enrique L, San Diego, CA, 9/19
