A Basic Description of Splash, Crash, Ride, Hi Hat & China Cymbals

Crash cymbals are designed for the explosive, exciting moments in percussion play.  They are intended to give fast, explosive sounds.  The common size range for Crash cymbals is from 14 to 18 inches. As with most instruments, the smaller the size the higher the pitch.

Ride cymbals, generally range from 18 to 24 inches, and are characterized as having a bright, well defined sound, with no wash and plenty of stick definition.  Ride cymbals are often used by drummers to drive the tempo.

Splash cymbals are designed to produce a short, sharp, wet sounds with no overtones.  They are generally offered in 8, 10 or 12 inches, however sometimes they are available in 9 & 11 inch sizes, such as with Istanbul's Traditional splash cymbals

Hi-hats produce a definite, crisp “chip”, without undue overtone. The most popular sizes are 13 and 14 inch.

China cymbals possess the classic Oriental sound and feel, they are trashy, dark and explosive. They typically are made in 14, 16 & I8 inch sizes.  China cymbals are certain to allow drummers to obtain an Asian feel in their playing.
