Listening to Gongs

There are two main ways to listen to sound, 1. listening for relationships between sounds and patterns of sound; and 2. listening into sounds.  Gongs are special instruments, which encourage both types of listening.

The most traditional method of gong playing and listening is to 'listen into the sound'.  This trains us in focus, relaxation and patience.  Listening into sounds is sometimes referred to "linear listening"; it is a listening for depth and clarity.  It helps the listen to listen inside and to achieve an inner experience.

Although listening into sound is a very important part of gong playing, listening to the relationship between sounds and the patterns of sounds is also stimulating and fun.

Exploring the different tones, which different regions of the gong produces as well as making rhythms, phrases and patterns on gongs is fun and beautiful.  Since most gongs produce overtones and harmonics it is a wonderfully rich experience to listen to and play rhythms on gongs.

In sum, listening into soudns and listening for patterns and relationships between sounds wonderful and fun parts of the healing-arts journey.
