Suspended and Bowl Gongs

In the world of gongs there are two broad categories, Suspended gongs and Bowl Gongs.  Both have been made and played for thousands of years.  Tibet is considered the home of the bowl gong.  And China is considered the place where the suspended gong was first made.  thus, it is no surprise that the Chinese gongs are considered the best in the world.

Playing Suspended Gongs

Suspended Gongs are traditionally played with beaters or mallets. Small gongs are traditionally played with bamboo sticks or even western style drum sticks.  Larger gongs are played with beaters or mallets.  Typically, the larger the gong the softer and bigger the mallet.  When playing a large gong, the player will often "prime" (lightly striking without creating an audible sound) the gong prior to the main stroke.  Priming significantly enhances the sound of the main stroke.  The prime stroke is not meant to be heard but rather to stimulate the gong and create vibrations that are essentially inaudible to the audience.  Priming requires a sensitive touch and is one of the most challenging techniques for a gong player.

About Suspended and Bowl Gongs

Wuhan Suspended Gongs

Since Wuhan gongs are considered the best gongs in the world Artdrum is very pleased to offer the full line of Wuhan gongs. Wuhan offers several types of classic suspended gongs.

Wuhan's great experience and knowledge is displayed in all their gongs, which prove to be beautifully manufactured singing machines.

Wuhan Chinese gongs help confirm China's reputation as the gong making country of the world.  In China gongs have, for thousands of years, been used in various settings, for various purposes.

For instance, Wind Gongs possess that authentic and true gong sound is typified by its brilliant shimmer and can be used to help focus meditation and in spiritual ceremonies, as well as various forms of music.  Opera Gongs are strong and used in traditional Chinese operas.

Chau gongs would are used in government ceremonies to pronounce high officials, to warn or call people to gather.

Like the Wind gong, the Tiger gong has a true gong sound but the Tiger is a little more richer in sound the shimmer Wind.  The Tiger is great with many forms of music and for meditation too.  It's pitch is slightly descending.

Another very rich true gong sound comes from the Jin Ban gong.  Contrary to the Tiger gong its pitch is slightly ascending.

The Bao gong is the gong connected most with the rich history of Chinese philosophy and spirituality.  The Bao is traditionally used in Chinese temples.

The Pasi gong is most associated with entertainment, even pageantry.  It is used to announce the start of  any number of Chinese cultural events such as plays and circuses.
