There two general categories for metal singing bowls, Hand-made & Machine-spun. Hand-made bowls have the most nuances of tone. They tend to have lots of over tones over a distinct fundamental tone. Machine-spun bowls have less over tones than the hand hammed, but very clear, pure fundamental tone. The machine-spun bowls have less nuances than the hand-made, but the pureness of tone is a beautiful quality with the machine-spun singing bowls.
Our singing bowls, which are also called meditation bowls, are carefully shaped bronze bowls made with the intent of being used for meditation or musical purposes.
Playing a meditation bowl is a great way to balance mind, body and spirit. There is rich history of the use of meditation bowls in the East. Meditation bowls are mentally stimulating and create a rich sensory experience for players and listeners. They produce many subtleties of sound, which help to sharpen our senses.
They can also compliment many musical forms. They can be used to create rhythms as well as effects and ornamental sounds. Special techniques, such as adding water to a bowl (see video above), can create warping sounds and sparkling water fountains when the bowl is rhythmically tapped.
