Review: I have bought nine (9) skins from Art drum over the years. I keep coming back because of the quality of the skins and their help, whether discussing what kind of skin to get (Steer Skin, steer, bleached, horse) or measuring the rims for a flesh hoop; he is there from beginning to end. ~J.C., IL, USA, 1/15
"Thank you so much for the beautiful, high-quality, perfect-sounding steer skin you selected for my large take drum! It looks great and sounds exactly as we had discussed on the phone." ~Denis K, CA 8/17
Skin Material: Steer
Medium Skin Thickness: consistently between 1.75 - 2.2 mm (medium skins have a higher lower tonal range than thick skins)
Thick Skin Thickness: consistently between 2.2 - 3 mm (thick skins have a lower tonal range than medium skins)
Soaking Time for Medium Skins: about 6 - 8 hours
Soaking Time for Thick Skins: about 9 - 10 hours
Sound Quality (Timbre): Our natural steer skins have a slightly brighter timbre than our white steer or cow skins. As the natural steer skin dries over time its timbre because slightly drier & woodier. Our medium & thick natural steer skins are commonly used on congas, tam boras & Taiko drums.
Sound Range: Thick skins produce a deeper bass & lower range of tones than medium skins. Medium skins produce a higher range of tones than thick. Our medium skins are a great balance between a warm bass & high pitches while our thick skins produce the deepest bass & lowest pitch range though they produce outstanding slaps & higher pitches when tuned high.
