"...Being a customer at Artdrum is a delight, I feel understood and truly respected. As a company Artdrum is a gem and a gift to the musical world.  They are a company not driven by profit but by a deep longing to spread the tribal beat onto this Earth." ~Maryse Thuot Nova Scotia, Canada

About the Doumbek & Darbuka

The Doumbek (Dumbek) is also called the Darbukah (Darbuka) and is a hand drum that originated in the Mid East.  It is native to Egypt, Turkey and Armenia.

North African countries too such as, Egypt, are also known for this drum.  In North Africa the instrument is often called a doumbek, whereas in the Middle East it is usually called darbukah.  Still, the term among drummers are typically interchangeable and so are they on this site.

Middle Eastern and African doumbeks also differ in the materials from which they are made.  Mid East ones are popularly made from various metals, including brass, copper, aluminum & nickel.  African ones are commonly made from clay.  Artdrum sells a variety of metal, Pakistani and Egyptian, Doumbeks.

The Dumbek is know for its clear & crisp high tones as well as soothing bass tones.  It has distinct high and low sounds that makes it popular for belly dancing and drum circles.

Three Basic Tones of the Doumbek & Darbuka

The Doumbek has Three Basic Tones and Several Additional Ones:

DUM is the bass tone played with your right hand in the
            middle of the drum.
TEK is a high ringing sound played with your right hand.
The tone is produced by striking the outside edge of the head were the edge of the drum and the skin meet.
KA is the same sound as tek, but played with your left hand.
