It is native to Egypt, Turkey and Armenia. North African countries too such as, Egypt, are also known for this drum. In North Africa the instrument is often called a doumbek, whereas in the Middle East it is usually called darbukah. Still, the term among drummers are typically interchangeable and so are they on this site. Middle Eastern and African doumbeks also differ in the materials from which they are made. Mid East ones are popularly made from various metals, including brass, copper, aluminum & nickel. African ones are commonly made from clay.
