When the heads are cared for, then we have found that LP heads last for many years. Below are pics of a Galaxy fiberglass conga, which we have had since 2006. The drum still has its original LP head and it still has great response and the drum sounds fantastic! We also have Classic conga, Palladium conga, Patato Conga & CP Supreme conga heads that have lasted for years.
In time heads do loose their flexibility, but overall we have found LP heads retain their flexibility and sound great for several years. We also recommend putting a little shay butter or natural skin moisturizer on your head ever approximately six months.
By the way, heads that are somewhat dry are not always bad. They tend to have a very crisp slap. Yet a head that is excessively dry runs more of a risk of cracking or breaking than does a moist head.
Below are pics of the Galaxy conga w/ the original head from 2006.
