Yet congas are most commonly used in Cuban and Latin music, African music, Blues, Rock 'n Roll and various forms of Jazz, including Latin-Jazz and Be Bop.
Conga Sizes
The conga head typically comes in three sizes, Quinto (sm.), Conga, (medium) Tumbadora or Tumba (Lg.). The diameters of style and manufacturer may vary slightly but typically the quinto conga has a diameter of 11", the Conga 11 3/4 and the tumba, 12 1/2". Sometimes the Quinto may be as little as a 10" head, as with the LP® Aspire series. LP® also makes a Requinto, which has a head of 9 3/4"; and a Caribe, which has a head of 9".
Most commonly, the conga shell comes in sizes ranging from 28" to 32" in height.
Materials
Congas have metal rims with metal tuning hardware and wooden (various woods) or fiberglass shells. The traditional Cuban Conga was made from olive barrels or steam-bent staves of wood glued together with a calf or buffalo head tacked to it, but now congas are made from various woods and fiberglass.
