Keeping a Conga Drum Safe in Cold Weather

Q: How do I keep my conga, or any other drum with a skin, from going badly out of tune while traveling in the winter?

A: Try keeping your conga or drum wrapped and covered while traveling in the cold.  A conga bag may help a lot.  Blankets (or towels) may also help.

For instance, you can store you conga in a well sealed bag and/or you can stick a blanket inside the conga, filling the space of the shell, especially near the head, with the blanket.  Plus, you can wrap a blanket (or towel) around the outside of the head.

However, when ever traveling you should plan to have to re-tune before playing again.  During your play time, as the conga changes temperature, you may even need to re-tune more.  Some players de-tune after each time they play; and thus re-tune each time before playing.
