Reviews:

I have bought nine (9) skins from Artdrum over the years. I keep coming back because of the quality of the skins and their help, whether discussing what kind of skin to get (Steer Skin, steer, bleached, horse) or measuring the rims for a flesh hoop; he is there from beginning to end.  ~J.C., IL, USA, 1/15

"Thank you so much for the beautiful, high-quality, perfect-sounding steer skin you selected for my large taiko drum! It looks great and sounds exactly as we had discussed on the phone." ~Denis K, CA 8/17

"I must say that the sound that comes from them [the congas] is absolutely amazing, they have never sounded that good.  Thank you, the skins are the best and the look and character, and sound of them makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand!" Robert C, NY, USA, 5/17

Skin Material: Steer

Medium-light Skins: approximately 1.40 - 1.75 mm thick

Medium Skins: approximately 1.75 - 2.2 mm thick

Thick Skins: approximately 2.2 - 3 mm thick

Soaking Time for Medium-light Skins: about 4 - 6 hours

Soaking Time for Medium Skins: about 6 - 8 hours

Soaking Time for Thick Skins: about 9 - 10 hours

Sound Quality (Timbre): Our natural steer skins have a slightly brighter timbre than our white steer or cow skins.  However, as the nautral steer skins/heads dry over time their sound becomes drier, woodier & crisper compared to when they are less dry/moister.

NOTE: Medium-light skins are brighter in timbre than medium & thick. Medium-light also respond quicker and they are airier sounding & less robust than medium & thick. Medium skins have a warmer & woodier timbre than medium-light; thick skins have a warmer & woodier timbre than both medium & medium-light (still, our medium & thick natural steer are brighter compared to our medium & thick white steer & cow skins).

Our medium natural steer skins are commonly used on requintos, quintos, congas, tumbas, super tumbas, tamboras, batas (especially large bata heads on Iyas & Itoteles) & Taiko drums.

Our thick natural steer skins are commonly used on requintos, quintos, congas, tumbas, super tumbs, tamboras, batas (especially large bata heads on Iyas & Itoteles) & Taiko drums.

Our medium-light steer skins are most commonly used on requintos, especially if you want a brighter sound & the quickest response, Jr congas, bongos & batas (especially Okoncolos & the small heads for Iyas & Itoteles).

Sound Range: Medium-light skins produce the highest pitch range; medium skins are a great balance between a warm bass & high pitches; thick skins produce the deepest bass & lowest pitch range though they produce outstanding slaps & higher pitches when tuned high.
